AI60: Hiking Tour to Sautso, Northern Europe's Largest Canyon
Bring your hiking boots – this tour will take you out into the vast Finnmarksvidda plain to Northern Europe’s largest canyon. You’ll discover wildlife, endless sky and incredible photo opportunities along the way.
The tour begins just above the tree line in the area near Beskades mountain. Accompanied by guides from Gargia Lodge and cheerful pack dogs to carry supplies, you’ll follow a relatively gentle trail through the wilderness. After an exhilarating hike and two small rivers, you’ll arrive at the edge of the canyon. Do you dare to go all the way to the edge of the viewpoint? If you do, you’ll be rewarded with the sight of the Alta River more than a hundred meters below you! You’ll hear the roar of Gabofossen (the Gabo waterfall) from the river below.
At the canyon, it’s time for a rest and lunch around a bonfire. With lunch and coffee done, it will be time to head back to the starting point. Along the way back, you may be able to spot reindeer herds in their summer pasture. Keep an eye out for a “gabba” reindeer, which is an all-white color.
The tour includes the guided hike to the canyon and lunch along the way. Bring sturdy shoes that can get wet, and make sure to dress appropriately for the weather – even in the summer, the area can be cool, windy and maybe even rainy. The trail is moderately challenging, and you need to be reasonably fit to make the journey. Minimum age 14 years.
