AI146: Hike up Mt. Haldde to the Northern Lights Observatory With a Husky (904 m above sea level!)

Mt. Haldde’s distinctive appearance, along with its interesting history, make this local mountain peak one of Alta’s most recognizable locations.

The world’s first northern lights observatories were built here at Mt. Haldde and nearby Talvik Mountain in 1899. The first teams stayed through the winter of 1899, and then after an absence for some years returned again in 1912. From 1912 to 1926, the Haldde observatory was in regular, full-time use. Four apartments housed the researchers and their families – children were even born up at the observatory!

The length of this tour is around 18 kilometers round-trip, with a rise in elevation of almost 1000 meters. We will follow the well-marked and well-established trail to the top, and expect that the total walking time will be around 5 hours. Even though this is a relatively long tour, there are local school-age children who regularly make the climb. It is strenuous but not impossible! Bring good mountain-hiking boots, and a pack with extra clothes – you may very well find temperatures at the top to be a lot colder than you expect, and a warm sweater, hat, gloves and long pants will be a welcome change.

If you want to turn this into a two-day adventure, we can do that! We will climb to the top on the first day, and spend the night in the restored buildings of the observatory at the top. Our sturdy husky pack-dog will help us share the load, as we bring sleeping bags, gear, food and drink to the top.

The tour includes transport from and back to Alta, and lunch along the way.
