AI29: Family adventure – dog and sled

Keen to take the whole family on a dog sledding adventure? When children join our trips, it’s normally full speed action all the time. They want to investigate and test everything, preferably everything at the same time. Young and old alike will love this special dogsled trip to Alta’s best tobogganing hill.

We pick you up from one of our collection points in Alta and drop you back there after the trip. You will receive warm winter clothing on arrival if needed.

After a brief and precise introduction about how to operate the sled, we go into the dog yard, where you will be greeted by many happy Alaskan huskies. They are used to being visited by guests of all ages, and have been handled ever since they were young puppies. Every dog has its own kennel with its name on it. You will be given a card with the name of the dogs that are going on the trip, and YOU get to find the dogs and (with our help if needed) harness the teams to the sleds. We use a big sled to carry the group; but we also have special children’s sleds which older kids can drive if they prefer.

When everything is ready, we open the gate and set off into the peace and tranquility of the forest, marveling at the majestic nature as we are pulled along by our enthusiastic dogs. After around half an hour’s dog sledding, we will arrive at one of Alta’s best tobogganing slopes. We tie up the dogs and head for some action on the hill.

Snow and fresh air make you hungry, so we serve a delicious homemade lunch around an open fire. After lunch, we drive the dog teams back to the dog yard, help each other remove the harnesses, and see who remembers which dog lives in which kennel!

The tour includes transport between Trasti & Trine and Alta, warm clothing if needed, instruction and assistance to prepare the dog teams, the tour itself, and lunch.

You will be in close contact with a large number of dogs in the dog yard. They are very friendly and love attention, but be ready for some excited noise and muddy paws now and then. Handling a dogsled is a moderately physical activity, and you should have good enough physical condition that you can stand on one leg and control the sled for an extended period. This also applies to older children who want to drive a sled – they must be old enough and able to handle it safely.
