AI50: Dogcarting Along the Alta River
It’s fall and there is no snow, but you can still take an exciting ride with a dog team while you are here in Alta. Holmen Husky Lodge will bring you out from Alta city center to their husky farm, and teach you what you need to know to drive the special off-road cart that you’ll use instead of a sled. With rugged design and suspension, hydraulic brakes and an easy and effective steering system, it’s the perfect vehicle for rolling over the local terrain.
Then you’re off, into the forest and down towards the nearby river either as driver or passenger on the cart. Your dog team, excited at the start, will quickly find their silent rhythm and settle in for the run. You’ll rumble and roll peacefully along the trail, marveling at the beauty of the arctic in summertime.
When you return, you can take a moment to say thank you to the dogs, and then head over to a lavvo (a traditional Sami tent) where something to drink and pleasant conversation await you. Your hosts will talk with you about life on the husky farm, breeding and training the racing dogs, and stories about racing through the arctic wilderness on the 1000-km Finnmarksløpet race that starts and ends in Alta. And of course, you will have some extra time to visit the friendly and eager dogs around the dog yard, take some pictures and get dog kisses.
The tour includes transport to and from Alta city center, instructions beforehand, the dog cart tour, coffee/tea or hot blackcurrant drink after the tour, conversation and time to visit with the dogs.
This activity is available September to December, but please be aware that our dogs cannot run when it is too warm outside (around 10C is the warmest they can tolerate). We reserve the right to cancel or reschedule tours if it is dangerous for our dogs to run.
You will be in close contact with a large number of dogs in the dog yard and along the trail. They are very friendly and love attention, but be ready for some excited noise and muddy paws now and then. Handling a dog cart is a moderately strenuous physical activity, so if you want to drive you will need to be able to stand on the back of the cart during the trip. ALL participants, even passengers, must have sufficient insurance to cover this type of activity, and all participants will be required to sign an insurance waiver before being allowed to ride or drive a dogsled.
