AIS02: Private Tour to Alta Canyon and Power Station
This is a special version of a tour that is normally only available for large groups. You’ll travel outside of Alta to visit Alta Canyon and the active but empty power station and dam.
The tour starts in Alta. You will be picked up by a guide/driver in a private car, and driven out to Sautso, the biggest canyon in Northern Europe. The one-hour ride to the canyon will give the guide time to talk with you about life in Alta and Norway, the history of the area, and details about the history and controversy of the dam and the Sami people in the area.
You’ll have time to stop and take some pictures of the stunning canyon view, and then it’s off to the power station itself. Though the facility is currently generating power, all operations are controlled remotely, so you and your guide will very likely be the only people in the huge facility! You’ll descend through a tunnel to the visitor center inside the rock cliff, see a short film produced by the power company, and then head out to walk across the dam itself if weather conditions permit.
With your visit complete, your guide will return you safely to Alta. If there is extra time remaining, the guide can give you more photo opportunities, or take you to see a few extra sights around the city of Alta.
The tour’s total time is 3.5 to 4 hours, and includes stops at the canyon and dam (and possibly other viewpoints along the way). The tour is guaranteed to be exclusive, so only your guided group will be at the power station during the tour (although the power company may have workers or guests in the facility during the tour). Please note that this tour makes use of small and sometimes private roads. High winds or other extreme weather may require that we postpone or cancel the tour. Tours require groups from 2-8 people.
